Cemeteries as Museums
I love to visit the older sections in cemeteries. The designs hand carved into monuments of a century ago inspire my own work. Recently ZI attended the Association of Gravestone Studies (AGS) (put link here please) in Danbury ,CT. Tours included Wooster Cemetery in Danbury, Sleepy Hollow in Terrytown, NY & The Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. Ivy entwined raised letters in marble stopped me dead in my tracks. Detailed texture was woven with geometric patterns and hand carved in granite, banding an entire obelisk base. This month I applaud the stone carvers of yesterday and today who keep the craft alive and well!
With Gratitude,
