Project: A Contemporary Monument of Glittering Glass and Dappled Pink Granite

A rare monument stands at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts. Not only is the design a first of its kind in the Karin Sprague Stone Carvers shop, but the material itself is no longer quarried. The piece of Westerly Pink Granite is cut clear through, a third of the way down. A slab of custom-made russet glass sits between the two pieces of dappled pink stone.

This monument is as unique as the life it memorializes and celebrates. Leonard Bierbrier loved nothing more than to come home after work, sit in the library, light a fire, and read. In the angled light of the sun, the glass slab’s overlapping edge paints a mesmerizing flame upon the stone, sharing Leonard’s simple joy with visitors as they pass.
